Welcome to Troop 1!

History of Troop 1

Welcome to the Troop 1 family. What happens next?

As Scoutmaster of Troop 1, I wanted to reach out with a brief word about next steps. We're looking forward to having your Scout (and you) become members of the Troop 1 family!

At the crossover ceremony, your Scout was met by representatives of Troop 1, and he received a new neckerchief and slide, shoulder loops, and a Troop 1 unit numeral. In the coming week, you'll be contacted by one of our volunteer New Member Ambassadors who will extend a friendly greeting to your family and help you work through this transition period.

After the crossover, your Scout can begin attending Troop 1 meetings. We meet weekly on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30, as long as school is in session. Our meetings take place at the Troop 1 Scout House on Leavitt Street, down the road on the left from the Hingham Public Library.

At your Scout’s first meeting, we'll ask you come inside the Scout House together, to fill out a new application and pay pro-rated dues of $75 (check payable to Troop 1, Hingham). Once this is done, your Scout will receive his Boy Scout Handbook and the Troop 1 Guidebook. He'll also receive a special custom-made Troop 1 anniversary patch which recognizes Troop 1 for having been in existence for more than 100 years. Your family will also be able to create an account on the Troop 1 website and added to its email distribution list. At your earliest convenience, we need you to provide us with a Troop 1 Activity Permission Slip and a completed Scout medical form (http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_AB.pdf) for our records.

All of our crossover Scouts this year will be formed into a single new patrol, which will be led by a Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader (both Scouts) and advised by one of our Assistant Scoutmasters. This patrol assignment is temporary through the end of the school year and will help all of our new Scouts learn our troop processes and earn their Scout rank.

Finally, I'd be remiss if I did not mention that we would greatly appreciate your participating in the Troop as well, either on our Troop Committee or by taking on a role in our adult leadership, or in some other productive way.

We have so much more to talk about, but hopefully this letter and the attached information sheet answers the initial question, what happens next?

If you have any specific questions please contact me at scoutmaster@hinghamtroop1.com

Again, welcome to the Troop 1 Family!

Yours in Scouting,

Marty Buckley
Troop 1 Scoutmaster
